- Instructions
The most decadent, slightly tangy, slightly sweet with the complexity of brown onions, and pickles.
I always thought that my 5 minute yogurt dip was the best recipe that I ever discovered, but this recipe comes almost shoulder to shoulder.
Since the day I first made this dip, I have made it again only a zillion times. It's a fresh, non heavy, non greasy and a super shortcut version of the french onion dip.
Dare I say, this is eons better than the regular version which is quite heavy and those soft caramelized onions take a good part of an hour to cook.
Here we will use golden, almost fried onions instead of slow caramelized version. So your cooking time is cut by a tenth! Yayie!
Also this is a dip that can be made ahead and served cold or at room temperature.
Here is what we will do
- Sauté the onions till they are golden brown
- Just Mix everything together

Speaking of Chicken Wings, have you tried making Chicken wings in the Air fryer yet? With a fraction of fuss and oil? You have got to try it!
In fact you can Air fry Frozen chicken wings without thawing them!
Ingredients for Greek yogurt french onion dip
Here is what we need to make this addictive chip dip
Onions
Use whatever you have on hand- red, yellow or white.
You can cut it in half moons or chop it up. I like the texture of chopped up onions more. It sort of mixes with the rest of the ingredients instead of standing out.
Pickle
Depending on how big a fan you are, you can adjust the quantity of the pickle. It's called gherkin outside of America.
I like to almost mince it so that it's infused evenly.
Substitutions
This dip is Gluten free. You can make it vegan by using soy based yogurt and vegan mayonnaise instead.
You can also substitute Dill with some other herb like cilantro or parsley.
Hot Tip
To make the stainless steel pan nonstick, heat it till the pan is smoking. Sprinkle some water on it and proceed with your recipe!
How to Make Greek Yogurt French Dip
Step 1: Sauté the onions
Heat up a pan on medium heat. Add oil and follow it up with chopped onions.
Sauté continually for about 5 minutes till the onions are golden brown. Keep moving the onions so that the onions get golden from all sides.
The golden brown bits are the flavor, that's what you want.
Set the onions aside and let them cool till you get all the other ingredients prepped
Step 2: Whip the Yogurt & Mayonnaise
Whisk together the greek yogurt and mayonnaise till it's super uniform.
If you want the dip to be a tad bit more decadent, you can add more mayonnaise.I love the slight sweetness it brings.
Step 3: Add in the rest of the ingredients
Cool the onions. Super hot onions can break up your yogurt and make it watery. Just spread them on a tray and they will cool down fast.
Add the cooled onions, dill leaves and finely chopped pickle.
Give it all mix.
You can serve it immediately or let it cool for a bit in the refrigerator.
Storing Onion Yogurt Dip
Store this dip in an air tight container for 3-4 days. Though the color of the dip will become slightly more brown and the crispy onions might become softer.
Make sure to cover the dip, otherwise all your other stuff in the fridge will smell of cooked onions.(Been there, done that..multiple times..)
How to Serve Caramelized onion yogurt dip
The dip should be served at room temperature. It thickens when refrigerated. The brown caramelized onion also looses it's color a bit but the taste becomes better the more you rest the dip.
That said, I like this dip to be cold. It's a great contrast to crispy chips and spicy wings. So my suggestion is you start with cold yogurt and let the dip rest for 10-12 minutes before serving.
By itself, you can serve this Greek yogurt caramelized onion dip with chips, Home made pita Chips, veggies or crackers.
If entertaining is your jam, then I have got you! Depending on how big your party is, you can make 1 dip or several.
Assembling a dip platter with crisps and veggies is easier than cooking appetizers. It's also great finger food to munch on with drinks. This is what I usually have on my party table
- Dips- Hummus, Red Pepper Feta Dip , Cheese Ball
- Veggies- Sticks of carrots, cucumber, celery
- Fruit- This is optional. Kids usually love this part of my platter or make a fresh fruit salsa like this Mango Grilled Corn Salsa
- Crisps- Easy Air Fryer Pita Chips, Potato chips and other crisps.
- Crackers & Cheese
- Olives
Variations
French Onion Dip with Sour Cream- This is the usual way of making the french onion dip, but do it my way, with golden crisp onions instead of slow caramelized ones.
Loaded French Onion Dip- Imagine a sprinkling of crispy bacon on top! Ah..that would be so so good!
Spiced French Onion Dip - Yes...As an indian, sometimes we need spice on everything. I can totally imagine sprinkling a generous amount of chili flakes on this one!
Pairing
These are my favorite dishes to serve with this dip.
