Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Air fryer potatoes and onions - Quick, easy, crispy potatoes and onions, the perfect side for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

air fryer potatoes and onions on a beige plate.

Why this recipe works

1. Air frying onions, along with the potatoes, infuses the potatoes with a great flavor. Plus the crispy onions contrast so well against the potatoes.
2. 15-minute cook time with only 2 minutes of active time.
3. No more soggy potatoes- The air fryer does the work here, making the potato crisp from all sides without any work from your side.

This is a great side dish, using only a handful of ingredients and made in a fraction of the time.

I have been making this quick and easy side dish for years now. Depending on my mood and availability of ingredients, I switch up the seasoning, but the recipe's core remains the same.

Which is cubed up potatoes and onions, tossed in oil, and air-fried till they are crispy.

I like to serve this right out of the air frier when it's crispy on the outside and fudgy on the inside.

You can serve this with breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Imagine a fried egg over the crispy fried onions and potatoes with a drizzle of chili oil! I also make a spicy Indian version of fried potatoes with crispy curry leaves and chilies. Served with cold, creamy curd rice , it's the quintessential Indian comfort meal!

If potatoes are your choice of carb, then I have you covered. Try my air fryer crispy smashed potatoes or these perfect sweet potato wedges also made in the air fryer. I think potatoes, especially french fries, are better cooked in the air frier than deep fried in oil.

Have you ever made hasselback potatoes? If not then you must try my easy air fryer version of hasselback potatoes. They are addictive!

Ingredients for crispy potatoes & onions

Here are the simple ingredients you need to make this delicious recipe

ingredients needed to make crispy air fryer potatoes and onions- oil, salt, chili, garlic powder, potatoes and onions
  • Onion
  • Potatoes
  • Oil
  • Seasoning

See the recipe card for quantities.

Potatoes

Use any potatoes you have on hand. This recipe will also work with baby potatoes, red potatoes, russet potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Speaking of sweet potatoes, here is a recipe for air fryer sweet potato cubes.

The trick is, to cut the potatoes into cubes to get super crispy potatoes with a soft, fudgy center, all in under 10 minutes.

If you are looking for a baby potato recipe, then try these viral smashed potatoes and Indian-style baby potato fry.

Onions

Onions add a delicious roast onion taste, which is unmatchable.

I have used regular onions here. You can use red, white, or yellow onions. Onions cook and burn faster than potatoes. That's why they must be cut into big chunks or added to the air fryer mid-way. Did you know you could make air fryer onion rings ? Here is a recipe to make it from scratch!

Seasoning

You can use any seasoning you want. I have described a basic salt, garlic powder, and chili seasoning that works with most combinations and cuisines.

Depending on what I am serving the potatoes with, I like to use curry powder(or a version of it), Italian seasoning, gochujang, and honey. The exact measurements for these are in the recipe card.

Ingredients Substitutions

Most of the ingredients listed in the recipe are pretty simple. However, for whatever reason, if you do not have them on hand, here are some common substitutions.

  • Potatoes- The recipe will also work for sweet potatoes, yams, and raw bananas.
  • Onions - I love the taste of air-fried onions in this dish, but if you do not have onions, you can skip them or use onion powder.
  • Seasoning - Check the recipe card for detailed measured swaps.

How to make air fryer fried potatoes and onions

Step 1: Cutting the potatoes and onions

Wash the potatoes in cold water. If you want to use the potato skins, scrub the potatoes well.

As shown in the picture, peel and cut the potatoes into 1-inch chunks.

Step 2: Season

Toss the seasoning and oil with the onions and potato chunks. These potatoes will be fantastic even with less oil. So, you can use a spray of olive oil if you are trying to cut down the fat in your diet.

Step 3:Air fry

Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket. Do not worry about placing them in a single layer. The air fryer will do its magic, irrespective.

Air fry for 15-16 minutes. This time will vary largely based on the potatoes' size and quantity.

For 1 pound of potatoes, it took about 15 minutes to cook.

Cook till the potatoes turn golden brown and are fork-tender.

Hot Tip

For a decadent breakfast -Serve the fried potatoes with a fried egg on top.

Variations

You could give air-fried potatoes so many different delicious twists-

  • Baked Onions & Potatoes- Instead of air frying them, bake them in a sheet pan, moving them around mid-way for 25 minutes at 400F/ 180C
  • Air fryer potatoes and onions with bacon - Use bacon cubes along with the onions and potatoes while air frying. When using bacon, you can reduce the oil to just a spray.
  • Air fryer sausage, potatoes, and onions- Cut sausage into portions similar to potato. Air fry, as in the recipe.
  • Air fryer breakfast potatoes with onions and peppers - Add one red or yellow bell pepper along with the potatoes and onions.
  • Kid-friendly - Just stick to salt and pepper for the kids.

Serving roast potatoes

You can serve the potatoes straight out of the air fryer for breakfast or as a side for lunch and dinner. You can also serve it with a dip as an appetizer like this spicy Sriracha Garlic Lime Aioli or my favourite 5 minute yogurt dip.

Garnish these with green onion or chives.

This dish is a great complex carb, which, when paired with protein, will make a complete meal. I like to serve this along my easy Instant Pot Chicken Carnitas and sometimes as a simple Indian side with dal.
These potatoes are also a perfect side dish for this Easy Air fryer Frozen Tilapia Fish.

Storing

As with any crispy recipe, storing these delicious air fryer potatoes will make them soggy. You can store them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for upto 4-5 days. To serve, briefly air fry for 3-4 minutes till the potatoes are crispy again.

You can also freeze these potatoes in individual portions. To reheat, thaw the potatoes and air fry for 2-3 minutes till the potatoes are crispy again.

Notes

Air frying time will depend on the quantity of potatoes. It will also change based on the size of the cubed potatoes.
The bigger the potato cubes, the longer the potatoes will take to cook.

Seasonings

You can change the seasoning of the potato depending on your taste and the main dish. Here are some options
Curry - ½ teaspoon turmeric, ½ teaspoon ground chili, ½ teaspoon ground cumin and ½ teaspoon ground coriander. Or you can use 1 tablespoon of your preferred curry powder, sambhar masala or garam masala
Sweet and Spicy - 1 teaspoon Gochujang, 1 teaspoon honey. You can swap gochujang with harrisa or any other chili paste.
