Instant Pot Sweet and Sour Chicken- Asian Style Chicken with pineapple Chunks, bell peppers and Onions.Delicious Classic Chicken takeout dish made in the pressure cooker.
This is a healthier version of the classic dish.I have foregone the deep frying step for a recipe that can be made on an everyday basis.
The flavours are spot on - You can alter the amount of chilli based on your tolerance.We like our Sweet and sour chicken a bit spicy so we added another teaspoon of chilli flakes.
Ingredients for Instant Pot Sweet and Sour Chicken
Except for possibly pineapple, the ingredients are pretty standard.
- 1 lbs Chicken Thigh- Cut into 1 inch pieces
- 4-5 Cloves Garlic
- ½ Cup Pineapple Juice
- 1 Cup Pineapple Chunks
- 1 Large Onion or 2 medium sized
- 1 Red Bell Pepper
- 1 Green Bell Pepper
- 1 Yellow Bell Pepper
- 1.5 tbsp Cornflower or Arrowroot Powder
Sauces & Condiments
- ¼ Cup Rice Vinegar or Apple Cider Vinegar
- ¼ Cup Ketchup or Whole30 Ketchup
- ¼ Cup Soy Sauce or Coconut Aminos
Garnish
- 1 tsp Sesame Seeds
- 2 tbsp Green Onions
How to make Instant Pot Sweet and Sour Chicken
- Step 1- Dump & Pressure Cook - Add the Chicken Thigh,Sauces- Vinegar, ketchup,Soy sauce, pineapple juice and Garlic in the inner pot of instant pot.
Close the lid.Pressure COOK on HIGH for 4 minutes.Quick Release.
You can add your veggies at this step too, if you don't mind slightly mushy vegetables. - Step 2- Cook the Vegetables- Open the Instant pot.Add the - Pineapple slices,Onions and Bell peppers.
Close the lid.Pressure COOK on HIGH for 1 minutes. - Step 3- Finish- Add the Corn Starch mixed with ¼ Cup water.Bring to boil.If you like a lot of gravy, add ½ Cup of water more.
- Step 4- Garnish & Serve - Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.Serve hot with Rice.

This frankly is a super healthy version of the dish.If you want to decrease the calories further, Replace pineapple juice with a zero calorie sweetener.
Gluten Free
Make this sweet and sour chicken gluten free by replacing the soy sauce with tamari.
Whole 30 & Paleo
Sweet and sour chicken can be made paleo and whole 30 friendly with some quick swaps.

How to serve Sweet and Sour Chicken
Serve this Sweet and Sour chicken on top of steamed rice.
For a Paleo and Whole 30 friendly meal- replace the rice with Cauliflower Rice.

- Close the lid and PRESSURE COOK on HIGH for 1 minute.Quick Release after the time is over.
- Add the ¼ Cup water and Corn Starch mixed with 2tbsp of water.Bring to boil.
- If you like a lot of gravy, add ¼ Cup of more water.
- Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions.Serve hot with Rice.
